The Humans in the Loop: Q2 Round-Up of Life At Ocrolus

19 Jul 2022
life at ocrolus blog

Happy July, everyone, and welcome to our first Ocrolus culture blog!

At Ocrolus, we’ve built a culture that empowers our employees to be their authentic selves. As much as we enjoy making an impact by working hard, we value our people and foster a positive and inclusive environment that brings out the best in everyone.

Our Social Committee is dedicated to all things culture, with representation from teammates across departments. We know there’s a lot of work to do, and we enjoy doing it, but we also want every team member to look forward to coming to work.

Here’s a run down of everything we did the last quarter on the social side of things:

Giving Back

Giving back to the community is a belief that unites all the people working at Ocrolus. So, on May 14th, a group from the office went together to Cycle for Survival. Our team had a fantastic time raising money for rare cancer research. 100% of all donations from the event went to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. With all of our contributions, we raised almost $10,000!

At our June OcroDinner, we celebrated Pride! We had our dinner catered from a local LGBTQIA restaurant, Edy’s Grocer! Throughout June, we also raised over $2,000 for the Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organization for LGBTQ young people.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Every month, the cultural committee organizes dinner based on a significant theme for that month. We call these Ocro-Dinners. Our May Ocro-Dinner was in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander, or AAPI, Month! On May 18th, at the NY office, we had a Luau to represent one of the many people this month celebrates! The team got in the tropical spirit and enjoyed some delicious Hawaiian BBQ from Noreehtuh!

On May 19th, members of the People and the Marketing team volunteered at Hell’s Kitchen Farm Project, part of Community Support Agriculture, which works toward food justice in our community. They spray-painted signs, mixed manure, and prepped some pots.

Building Culture

We kick-started April cultural activities on a fun note with our Monthly Virtual Game Night on April 20 and Karaoke Happy Hour on April 28.

The gaming culture at Ocrolus’ NYC headquarters is booming! After the massive success of April’s Video Game Night, we decided to have a 16-person Mario Kart tournament. Things got wildly competitive, but we could only have one winner at the end. We crowned our first Ocrolus Mario Kart champion, our co-founder and CEO, Sam Bobley.

In June, our Gaming Culture continued to heat up. We had a 12-person Super Smash Bros. tournament. Once again, things got pretty heated, but the engineers stood out as our Senior Software Engineer, Bryce Wilson, was declared the winner, and Quincy Asemota, our TechOps Engineer, was the runner-up.

And lastly, we unwound with Ocrolus Appreciation Day, our company holiday on the last Friday of every month. That’s 12 extra days of #PTO per year.
