Genway Home Mortgage detects document fraud at loan setup with Ocrolus

featured genway home mortgage

Genway Home Mortgage is a mortgage lender operating in both wholesale and delegated channels, working with brokers to originate loans across its product set.

Genway uses Ocrolus, a vertical AI workflow and analytics platform for lenders, for document fraud detection and bank statement income analysis. Ocrolus checks documents for signs of alteration and returns income calculations in an editable worksheet, which keeps the underwriter focused on making decisions.

Challenge

Challenge

Genway Home Mortgage's underwriters were checking bank statements for altered fonts and balances by eye, and income figures were being assembled by hand across multiple documents.

Solution

Solution

Ocrolus flags altered documents so underwriters start their review from findings rather than suspicion, and returns bank statement income in an editable worksheet.

Results

Result

Bank statement income calculated before underwriting begins, with no manual assembly across multiple documents
Faster, more accurate income analysis in a worksheet underwriters can edit
Document fraud caught before a file moves forward
Higher confidence in documents that clear Ocrolus review
Faster escalation when a document is flagged for fraud

Challenge: Both document review and income calculation came down to manual work

Challenge: Both document review and income calculation came down to manual work

Catching an altered document meant reading every page closely. A changed font, a balance that did not tie out or a number that rendered differently from the rest of the statement. Visual review also left an underwriter without a way to support what they suspected.

"Detecting document fraud was manual; the underwriter looked at the document to see if there were any altered fonts, any altered balances and if the balances didn't add up," said Chinelo Nwanze, VP, Strategic Initiatives at Genway Home Mortgage.

Bank statement income added more manual work. The figure had to be assembled across several documents, and building it by hand put underwriter time into arithmetic rather than credit judgment. Nwanze joined Genway in May 2025 and found Ocrolus already in place for both reasons.

"The biggest drive and push to switch to Ocrolus was the fraud detection," Nwanze said. "And then the ability to return the income on the worksheet so we can easily finish out the income calculation process."

Solution: Document fraud detection and bank statement income in one workflow

Solution: Document fraud detection and bank statement income in one workflow

Genway runs both document fraud checks and bank statement income analysis through Ocrolus before a file reaches an underwriter. On the fraud side, Detect reviews the file itself rather than only how it renders on screen, surfacing changes a reviewer would not see.

"Ocrolus is number one in the industry right now for fraud detection, using the metadata to determine if a document has been altered," Nwanze said.

What it does not do is decide. Human review has not gone away at Genway, and Nwanze does not want it to. What changed is what a reviewer starts from.

"At the end of the day, the humans still have to review it," she said. "We have confidence in it running through Ocrolus; if it doesn't detect any fraud, there's a high chance it's not fraudulent."

The income side follows the same principle. Bank statements are uploaded at loan setup rather than at underwriting review, and the calculation comes back as an editable worksheet rather than a static PDF, so the underwriter adjusts the figure in the file instead of requesting a new run.

"The worksheet makes it easier for the underwriter to finish the calculation, apply any of the ratios and the expense factors that are needed, and then if they determine a large deposit has been verified, be able to add that back into the calculation," Nwanze said.

Result: Streamlined bank statement income analysis and document fraud detection

By the time a Genway underwriter reaches a file, the income has been calculated and the documents have been checked.

"Getting the income calculation uploaded ahead of time at loan setup really saves the underwriter time," Nwanze said. "By the time they get it, the document is already ready and they're just plugging in the numbers and moving forward."

Flagged documents move faster too, because the review starts from findings rather than a hunch.

"If Ocrolus flags document fraud, the process moves faster," Nwanze said.

Nwanze's confidence in Detect predates Genway. At a previous employer, she sat on a team evaluating vendors and tested them by submitting documents she had altered herself.

"I duplicated and manipulated documents to see if they caught the fraud, and those third parties didn't," she said. "I uploaded the same documents to Ocrolus and they caught it right away."

Key outcomes:

  • Bank statement income calculated before underwriting begins
  • Faster, more accurate income analysis
  • Document fraud caught earlier
  • Higher confidence in documents that clear Ocrolus review
  • Faster escalation when a document is flagged for fraud

Why Genway Home Mortgage recommends Ocrolus

For Nwanze, choosing a vendor comes down to the product and specifically to what it catches.

"The value is in the product itself," she said. "When it comes to document fraud detection, Ocrolus is the winner."

Genway's plans point toward more Ocrolus. Nwanze is working on connecting Ocrolus to the company's loan origination system, and she wants to expand usage of Ocrolus for income calculations for wage earner and self-employed borrowers as well.

"I’m excited to expand our deal desk here to be able to do income calculation upfront that is not limited to just bank statements," she said. "We’ll be able to do self-employed and wage earner income calculation worksheets.”

“When evaluating vendors, I duplicated and manipulated documents to see if they were caught as fraud. Third parties didn’t catch it. I uploaded the same documents to Ocrolus and they caught it right away."
