Legacy Mutual Mortgage standardizes income analysis and empowers its underwriting team with Ocrolus

featured Legacy Mutual Mortgage

Legacy Mutual Mortgage is a San Antonio-based residential lender operating across 42 states, with a network of independently run branches focused on making the mortgage process easier for borrowers and referral partners. As the company expanded its branch network, keeping loan file workflows consistent across every office became a growing operational priority.

Legacy Mutual turned to Ocrolus, a vertical AI workflow and analytics platform for lenders, to standardize income analysis and surface discrepancies earlier in the loan process.

Challenge

Challenge

Inconsistent loan file workflows across Legacy Mutual's 42-state branch network made it difficult for underwriters to review files quickly and build a reliable rhythm.

Solution

Solution

Ocrolus standardized income analysis company-wide and equipped processors with Inspect insights to surface discrepancies before files ever reach the underwriting desk.

Results

Result

β€’ Automated income analysis: Ocrolus replaced manual income calculations across all branches, delivering accurate, structured data and faster file reviews for underwriters
β€’ Proactive flagging: Inspect surfaces large deposits, BNPL activity and address discrepancies before files reach underwriting
β€’ Branch-wide consistency underway: Standardized production process rolled out across Legacy Mutual's full network as adoption expands

Challenge: Bringing consistency to a growing branch network

Challenge: Bringing consistency to a growing branch network

Legacy Mutual's branch structure gives loan officers flexibility and local presence across 42 states. As the network grew, standardizing how loan files were built and submitted across every office became a clear priority. Without a shared platform for income calculations, each branch relied on its own manual approach, leaving underwriters to interpret files built in different ways with no consistent format to work from.

"There's no one process," said Christina Hawkins, Implementation Coordinator at Legacy Mutual Mortgage. "Every branch follows its own way and underwriting just wouldn't get a consistent format. They didn't know how files were coming in."

Solution: Standardized income analysis, earlier visibility into every file

Solution: Standardized income analysis, earlier visibility into every file

Hawkins had a clear goal in mind. "If the underwriter knows files are going to come in the same way every single time, documents are going to be labeled the same way, then they can 1,000 percent move faster in underwriting."

With Ocrolus integrated into Legacy Mutual's production workflow, the underwriting team's response was immediate.

"The underwriters absolutely love it. They love how the files are coming in, they love working within Ocrolus, they love the asset option on there: being able to see buy now pay later, large deposits, things like that. The underwriters are 1,000 percent big fans," Hawkins said.

The team now reviews Inspect insights on every file before it moves forward. Inspect surfaces potential issues: large deposits, address discrepancies and items that would likely become underwriting conditions if not caught earlier, so processors can flag or resolve them proactively.

"It's alerting the upfront team of potential needs instead of underwriting having to condition for an LOE, an address discrepancy or a large deposit," Hawkins explained.

Result: Earlier flags, fewer conditions, a smoother path to close

With income analysis automated across every branch, underwriters at Legacy Mutual are working from accurate, consistent data on every loan. Manual calculations have been replaced with a standardized Ocrolus output, freeing underwriters to move through reviews more efficiently. "Ocrolus is just a time saver," Hawkins said.

Processors catching discrepancies upstream reduce back-and-forth at the close of the loan cycle. The downstream effect reaches the borrower directly. "Use Ocrolus as early as you possibly can to surface any red flags, then you can determine the best path for that borrower. It'll be smooth sailing towards the end."

Key outcomes:

  • Automated income analysis replaced manual calculations across all branches, delivering accurate, consistent data to underwriters on every loan
  • Inspect surfaced large deposits, BNPL activity and address discrepancies before files reach underwriting
  • Standardized production process rolled out across Legacy Mutual's full network as adoption expands
Result: Earlier flags, fewer conditions, a smoother path to close

Why Legacy Mutual recommends Ocrolus

The relationship between Legacy Mutual and Ocrolus extends well beyond implementation. Hawkins works closely with her Ocrolus account manager each week, coordinating on product updates, working through adoption strategies and planning the next phase of the rollout.

Together, they are focused on delivering continued value to Legacy Mutual's users and expanding how Ocrolus fits into more of the loan process, from leveraging Inspect for conditions to broadening adoption across more teams and departments

As the platform continues to evolve, that momentum gives Hawkins confidence in where the partnership is headed. "Ocrolus is always rolling out enhancements, and they’re always great."

"The underwriters absolutely love it. They love how the files are coming in, they love working within Ocrolus. The underwriters are 1,000 percent big fans."
